The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice D. Krishnakumar, a senior judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur. This decision comes in anticipation of the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Siddharth Mridul, on November 21, 2024.
Justice D. Krishnakumar, appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court in April 2016, is recognized for his expertise in constitutional law, alongside extensive practice in civil and service matters. A member of a Backward Community, Justice Krishnakumar is noted for his legal acumen, integrity, and honesty.
The Collegium emphasized adherence to the Memorandum of Procedure, which mandates fair representation across high courts while appointing Chief Justices. Currently, there is only one Chief Justice from the Madras High Court among the High Courts nationwide.
Justice Krishnakumar’s seniority and his proven competence were key factors in the Collegium’s recommendation. He is set to assume office following Justice Mridul’s retirement, serving until his own retirement in May 2025.
The resolution was signed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant on November 18, 2024.
