In a chilling case of honor killing that has shaken the community of Behedi’s Shahgarh, a young woman’s relentless desire to marry a neighbor led to her tragic demise at the hands of her own family. The Additional Sessions Judge-8, Kumar Gaurav, on Wednesday, delivered a verdict sentencing the victim’s father and uncle to life imprisonment for their heinous act of murder, under the guise of preserving familial honor.
The ordeal unfolded when Tarannum, the young woman, decided to elope with Sahib, a boy from the neighborhood, only to return four days later insisting on marrying him against her family’s wishes. Despite attempts by her father and uncle to dissuade her, citing the family’s honor, Tarannum remained adamant.
In the dead of night on May 28, 2022, Tarannum’s life was cut short as her father, Nafees Ahmed, and her uncle, Azad Hussain, smothered her to death in her room, disregarding the desperate pleas of her mother, Tabassum, who sought mercy for her daughter. The act was a grim testament to the extent some are willing to go to uphold perceived honor.
The prosecution, led by government lawyer Suresh Babu Sahu, presented seven witnesses, bolstering the case against the accused. The court, recognizing the gravity of the crime, denied bail to the accused, ensuring they remained in custody throughout the trial.
The swift judicial process, concluding the trial within 22 months and holding the perpetrators accountable, sends a strong message against the barbaric practice of honor killings.
