The Delhi High Court has issued a summons to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, following a defamation lawsuit initiated by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The lawsuit arises from comments Tharoor allegedly made in a television interview during April 2024, where he accused Chandrasekhar of engaging in electoral malpractices by offering money to voters in the Lok Sabha elections.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav presided over the proceedings, setting the next hearing for April 28. The court has taken a serious view of the allegations, instructing that the complaint be treated as a formal suit and that summons be accordingly issued to Tharoor.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is represented by the prominent law firm Karanjawala and Company, claims that Tharoor’s statements at various public events and media interactions have severely tarnished his professional and personal reputation. He is seeking substantial redress, including a public apology and Rs 10 crore in damages.
