Delhi High Court Seeks DU, College Response After Student Fails Due to Alleged Negligence

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Delhi University and Bhagini Nivedita College following a petition by a final-year undergraduate student who alleged she and her entire class were unjustly marked as failed in a practical examination due to institutional negligence.

Justice Vikas Mahajan sought responses from the university and the college after the petitioner, a BA (Programme) student, claimed that she was arbitrarily awarded an ‘F’ grade in the practical component of the sixth-semester subject titled “Children with Disability in India” for the academic session 2024–2025.

The student, represented by advocate Ashu Bidhuri, alleged that although she had duly appeared for the theory, internal assessment, and external practical components—which included a file evaluation, viva voce, and a written practical exam—the marks for the external practical were not uploaded on the university’s portal.

“Due to the negligence and mismanagement by the teacher concerned and the college administration, the entire class has been marked as failed,” the plea stated. Despite repeated complaints through emails and other communication channels, the petitioner alleged, no corrective action was taken.

The petition further claimed that instead of addressing the issue, the concerned teacher and the college authorities engaged in a “mutual blame game,” leaving students without redressal. The student argued that this erroneous grading has adversely impacted her Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and academic record—potentially affecting her eligibility for higher studies, competitive exams such as the UGC-NET, and future PhD opportunities.

The petitioner has urged the court to direct the authorities to correct the error, incorporate the actual marks for the practical exam, and issue a revised marksheet indicating a ‘pass’ grade in the subject.

The matter is expected to be heard next in due course following the response from the university and college.
