In a recent development, the Delhi High Court has granted bail to Amit Katyal, a close aide of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad, in a case concerning alleged corruption in the Indian Railways’ land-for-jobs scam. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna announced the decision, providing significant relief to Katyal, who has been under custody since his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on November 11, 2023.
Amit Katyal was apprehended under various provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), accused of playing a pivotal role in a scheme where land was allegedly exchanged for jobs in the railways. The ED’s investigation claims that Katyal, as the director of AK Infosystems Private Limited, facilitated the acquisition of land from job aspirants purportedly on behalf of the former railway minister and RJD supremo, Lalu Prasad.
This case has also implicated other members of Lalu Prasad’s family, highlighting a sprawling inquiry into the misuse of power for personal gain within the railways sector during Lalu Prasad’s tenure. Prior to this ruling, a trial court had denied Katyal’s bail application on May 22, citing insufficient grounds for relief.
