The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sharply criticized the Delhi government for its failure to allocate necessary funds for constructing official residences for district judiciary officials. The bench, consisting of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s laxity in adhering to the Supreme Court’s directives concerning housing for judicial officers.
During the session, the court rebuked the government’s approach, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the matter beyond mere verbal commitments. “Why is this matter not a priority for the government? We don’t appreciate lip service. Things should be seen on the ground,” the bench stated, urging the government to take substantial action rather than stalling the judicial directives.
The hearing involved two petitions, including one from the Judicial Service Association, which demanded expedited action to provide government residential homes to officers of the Delhi judicial and higher judicial services. This plea highlighted a significant shortfall in housing, with only 348 flats available against a sanctioned strength of 897 officers.

Further complications arose when it was revealed that the land in Shahdara, earmarked for a residential project, faced issues with fund release and suitability. The court also noted a delayed meeting initially scheduled for December 10, 2024, which was postponed due to the assembly elections, with no subsequent efforts to address the funding for these critical housing projects.
