The Delhi High Court has directed colleges affiliated with Delhi University (DU) to strictly follow the mandate of reserving seats under the extra-curricular activities (ECA) and sports quotas while granting admissions.
The direction came on August 25 from Justice Vikas Mahajan, while hearing a plea filed by tennis player Aditi Rawat, who sought admission to Hindu College under the sports quota. Rawat, a gold medallist at the CBSE nationals, had already secured admission in Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) under the same category.
Though Rawat’s admission at LSR was confirmed, her counsel, advocate Jeetender Gupta, urged the court to record an observation for future compliance. He submitted that DU’s Information Bulletin for 2025–26 mandates a 5 per cent reservation for admissions under the ECA and sports quota, and colleges must adhere to this guideline.

Taking note of the request, Justice Mahajan stated:
“It is hoped that the colleges of the University of Delhi (will) be careful in future in following the mandate with regard to the seats under ECA/sports admission, which as per the Information Bulletin of the academic session 2025–26, was mandatory.”
Rawat had also sought a direction to Hindu College to keep a seat under the sports quota reserved for her until her petition was decided.
