In a significant development, a Delhi court on Tuesday mandated the registration of an FIR against Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, probing his alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia ruled that there is a “prime facie” cognizable offence that necessitates a thorough investigation.
The decision came after hearing arguments on a petition filed by Mohammad Ilyas, a resident of Yamuna Vihar, who demanded the FIR registration against Mishra. Despite opposition from the Delhi Police, which argued that Mishra had no involvement in the riots, the judge highlighted that Mishra’s presence in the area at the time of the alleged offences was sufficient to warrant further investigation.
Judge Chaurasia’s directive underscores the need for an exhaustive probe into the allegations, setting the stage for a deeper examination of the events that led to the riots. The order marks a pivotal moment in seeking accountability for the violent clashes that shook the national capital in 2020.
