On the eve of the International Women’s Day, the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court addressed a gathering of Lawyers at District Bar Association Durg.

Chief Justice Sinha said:

International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March every year. It is an opportunity to commemorate women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements and highlights the need to continue accelerating gender equality.

The history of the day dates back to the early 1900s. From a single-day protest to a global movement for gender equality, its evolution spans over more than a century.

International Women’s Day is a global observance celebrated to honour the achievements and contributions of women in across the world in different realms. From pioneering scientists. groundbreaking entrepreneurs and trailblazing artists, women have made significant contributions to every section of the Society. Women now hold the highest positions in every industry and take on most extraordinary responsibilities that history has ever seen. Women are undoubtedly turning the world’s attention to them. They are achieving incredible heights and even travelling to space, as can be seen. In many sectors, women are now offered equal opportunities at work and are permitted to compete with and sometimes even outperform males.

The day also serves as a platform to raise awareness about gender equality, advocate for women’s rights, and address issues such as gender-based violence, discrimination, and the socio-economic disparities that women face.

The International Women’s Day 2024 campaign theme has been decided as “Inspire Inclusion”. The theme “Inspire Inclusion” encourages individual and communities to reflect on the importance of creating environment that embraces diversity and ensure the active participation and representation of women in all walks of life.

Throughout history, women have faced numerous challenges and barriers in their pursuit of justice and equality. Yet, despite these obstacles, women have stood firm in breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations.

In the legal profession, we have witnessed countless examples of women who have excelled and made significant contributions to the administration of justice. From innovating, hardworking & brilliant lawyers to Judges, women have played a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape and championing the cause of justice for all.

In Durg, the tapestry of leadership is woven with the threads of exceptional women, each contributing their unique brilliance to the fabric of our community. The District Judge, the President of District Bar Association and the District Collector of District Durg, are women of boundless compassion and vision. Moreover, as we celebrate the exemplary leadership of women in Durg, let us also take pride in the fact that the office of the President of our Nation is being graced by a woman symbolizing the enduring strength and capability of women to lead at every level of governance and society.

To all lady Judges and lady lawyers present here today. I want to express my deepest admiration and respect for your tireless efforts and dedication to the cause of justice. Your presence in the legal profession enriches our collective experience and strengthens our justice system. Your contributions do not go unnoticed, and I encourage you to continue to work hard for excellence and uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

As we will celebrate International Women’s Day tomorrow, let us reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and justice for all. Let us continue to support and empower women in the legal profession and beyond, recognizing that their voices and perspectives are essential for building a more just and equitable society.

I end by quoting few words of great poet and Philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, who has beautifully articulated the essence of women empowerment with the following words:

“The woman power is the creative power in the universe. It is the oldest power ever known on earth. The earth is surrounded by it.”

Let us draw inspiration from these profound words and commit to fostering an environment where every woman’s potential can flourish. Let us challenge stereotypes, break down barriers and ensure that the coming generations inherit a world of true equality where every woman and girl feel safe and empowered.
