Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday paid glowing tributes to Swami Vivekananda, hailing him as the “greatest international ambassador” of India’s cultural and philosophical heritage. He was speaking at a blood donation camp organised on the Supreme Court premises to mark Vivekananda Jayanti, which is observed annually as National Youth Day.
The blood donation drive was jointly organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Adhivakta Parishad, and saw participation from several Supreme Court judges and senior advocates.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the event, CJI Surya Kant said,
“Each word he [Vivekananda] spoke was important, visionary, full of moral and ethical values and promoted our great country’s rich heritage and cultural values. He was India’s greatest international ambassador of culture and philosophy.”
He described Vivekananda as a visionary leader whose thoughts continue to resonate with contemporary India, especially with the younger generation.
“Swami Vivekananda was a great personality. I believe his teachings will always remain relevant and are extremely important for the new generation and for this country,” the Chief Justice added.
The camp, held on the lawns of the Supreme Court, was part of the annual celebration of Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, which the Government of India declared as National Youth Day in 1984. Since 1985, the day has been observed nationwide to commemorate the life and teachings of the 19th-century monk, known for his rousing speeches on spiritual and national awakening.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the legal fraternity, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to public service and national values espoused by Vivekananda.
