CJI Chandrachud Advocates for Simplification and Regionalization of Legal Education

Lucknow, July 13, 2024 โ€” The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has emphasized the need for the legal profession and legal education to become more accessible to the general public. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMLNLU) in Lucknow, the CJI highlighted the importance of teaching law in regional languages to bridge the gap between the judiciary and the common people.

In his address, Chief Justice Chandrachud pointed out a fundamental flaw in the legal profession if its principles cannot be explained in simple terms to the general populace. “If we cannot convey the principles of law in a manner that the common man can understand, there is a significant flaw in our profession and our educational system,” he stated.

To mitigate this, CJI Chandrachud proposed the introduction of LLB courses in Hindi at RMLNLU. He argued that legal education should not only be confined to English but also include regional languages, especially when dealing with regional legal issues. This approach, he believes, would make the law more relatable and comprehensible to the public.

Making Justice Accessible

Chief Justice Chandrachud also shared various initiatives he has undertaken to make the judicial process more accessible. One notable effort is the translation of Supreme Court decisions from English into several languages recognized by the Indian Constitution. This initiative aims to ensure that people from diverse linguistic backgrounds can understand and benefit from judicial decisions.

Emphasizing the need for legal education to address regional concerns, the CJI advocated for the inclusion of laws related to regional issues in university curricula. By doing so, future legal professionals will be better equipped to handle cases and issues pertinent to their local context, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the legal system.

Upholding the Rule of Law: CM Yogi Adityanath’s Remarks

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, who was also present at the event, echoed the sentiments of the CJI. He remarked that the rule of law is a cornerstone of good governance and is crucial in shaping India’s global image. “The rule of law is a precondition for good governance. It plays a vital role in changing perceptions about our country,” he said.

Degrees Distributed

Both the CJI and CM Adityanath participated in distributing degrees to the graduating students of RMLNLU, marking a significant milestone in their academic and professional journeys. The convocation was a moment of pride and reflection, underscoring the evolving landscape of legal education and the judiciary in India.

The address by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud at the RMLNLU convocation highlighted crucial areas for improvement in the legal field, particularly the need for simplification and regionalization of legal education. His vision, coupled with the support of regional leaders like CM Yogi Adityanath, sets the stage for a more inclusive and accessible legal system in India.
