As the Supreme Court of India resumed sessions after the winter break, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna offered his New Year greetings to lawyers and litigants. The apex court had been closed for the holidays from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
Addressing the courtroom, Chief Justice Khanna said, “I wish you all a happy new year. May you and your families have a joyful and prosperous year ahead.” This traditional greeting marked the beginning of the day’s proceedings.
However, the session quickly moved to administrative matters, addressing an ongoing issue with the court’s email system. “I am told the email for mentioning is not working. You can move the physical letters accordingly,” stated CJI Khanna. He explained that these letters would be assessed in the afternoon, and necessary orders for the urgent listing of cases would follow.
This directive comes after Justice Khanna, upon his appointment as CJI, had previously ceased the practice of oral submissions for urgent listings, a move aimed at streamlining court procedures. He established a protocol where lawyers could advance urgent cases by sending emails or writing physical letters to the court.
