With Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna at the helm, the Supreme Court Collegium has been reconstituted following the retirement of former CJI DY Chandrachud on November 10. Justice Khanna, who took office on Monday, leads the five-member panel responsible for appointing Supreme Court judges, joined by Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and the newest member, Justice AS Oka.
The recent reshuffle also established a three-member Collegium responsible for appointing High Court judges, now comprising CJI Khanna, Justice Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant.
Justice DY Chandrachud, before his retirement, had appointed Justice Khanna as his successor on October 17. During his tenure, CJI Chandrachud issued notable rulings, including those preserving the integrity of electronic voting machines, nullifying Article 370, addressing electoral bond transparency, and granting interim bail to Delhi’s former Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.
Justice Khanna, from a respected Delhi family with a legal legacy, is the son of former Delhi High Court Judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and nephew of the late Supreme Court Justice HR Khanna. A third-generation lawyer, 64-year-old Justice Khanna has set his sights on reducing case backlogs and expediting justice delivery in his tenure.
