Chief Justice Khanna Encourages Newly Qualified AoRs to Engage in Pro-Bono Work Alongside Professional Duties

Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on February 21, congratulated 356 newly qualified Advocates-on-Record (AOR), emphasizing their dual role in legal practice and community service. During the induction ceremony, held at the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna, alongside Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan, highlighted the unique position AORs hold in impacting society positively through legal aid and pro-bono efforts.

Justice Khanna, referring to a recent judgment by Justice Oka, underscored the weighty responsibilities expected of AORs by the apex court. “All the best to you! Supreme Court expects a lot from you. Justice Oka’s judgement has pointed out your responsibility—please come up with our expectations!” he remarked with a smile.

The Chief Justice urged the AORs to dedicate part of their practice to pro-bono work, an effort that would enrich their professional lives and benefit society. “Do one for your kitchen, one for the society; keep a track record of how much you are doing for them. Enroll yourself with the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee if possible. All the best!” he added.

Justice KV Viswanathan also spoke, reminding the new AORs of the great opportunity they have to carry forward the legacy of the legal profession.

Sharing a personal anecdote from his early days in law, Justice Khanna spoke about the art of drafting effective legal arguments, stressing precision and articulation. “I was tasked with drafting a petition to be filed abroad and was advised to be brief. After minimizing it to just three grounds, the advocate returned the file, emphasizing cost-effectiveness. That’s the art of drafting—how to put across your point briefly yet effectively can help a lot,” he concluded.
