Chief Justice Chandrachud Criticizes Lawyer for Not Wearing Neckband, Emphasizes Importance of Dress Code in Court

In a notable incident during a Supreme Court hearing on Friday, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud reprimanded a lawyer for appearing in court without a neckband, questioning, “Is this some kind of fashion parade?” The confrontation highlighted the strict adherence to dress codes required in Indian courts.

When the lawyer explained that he had forgotten to wear the neckband in haste, Chief Justice Chandrachud sternly responded, “If you are not in proper uniform, I cannot hear your case.” This incident underscores the critical nature of professional attire in the judiciary.

The Bar Council of India mandates a specific dress code for lawyers appearing in various courts, including the Supreme Court, High Courts, and lower tribunals. The attire includes a black coat, white shirt, and an advocate’s gown, accompanied by a white neckband. Jeans or casual attire is strictly prohibited in courtrooms.

Historical Significance and Symbolism of the Neckband

The white neckband worn by advocates is not just part of their uniform but carries symbolic significance. It represents purity and the ‘Tablets of Law,’ according to Christian belief, which Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. These tablets, engraved with Godโ€™s commandments, symbolize the foundation of law and justice, reinforcing the solemn atmosphere of the courtroom.
