The Central Government on Thursday formally cleared the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar to the office of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The official announcement of the appointment was made by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a post on the social media platform X.
The appointment follows a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on August 24 of this year.
Justice Chandrashekhar’s judicial career began with his appointment as an additional judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 17, 2013. He was subsequently made a permanent Judge of the court on June 27, 2014. More recently, he assumed the responsibilities of acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on December 29, 2023. Prior to his current appointment, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court and then to the Bombay High Court in July 2024.
Before his elevation to the bench, Justice Chandrashekhar had a distinguished career as an advocate. He enrolled with the Delhi State Bar Council on December 9, 1993, and practiced for 19 years in Delhi, handling a wide array of civil and criminal matters. His practice was predominantly before the Supreme Court of India, where he was involved in approximately 3,500 cases and his name appeared in connection with around 140 reported judgments.
During his time as a lawyer, he served as the Standing Counsel for the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the State of Jharkhand in the Supreme Court. He also represented a diverse range of clients, including the Bihar State Housing Board, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, in addition to various corporations and private entities.
