The Central Government has officially announced the appointment of Chief Justice Manmohan of the Delhi High Court as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. This announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Minister of Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Arjun Ram Meghwal, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the minister’s announcement, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”
The appointment comes following a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium on November 28. The Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and comprising Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S Oka, has supported Justice Manmohan’s elevation.
Justice Manmohan, who has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court since September 2024 and acted as its Acting Chief Justice since September 2023, has a distinguished legal career. Born on December 17, 1962, he completed his LL.B from Delhi’s Campus Law Centre in 1987 and was admitted to the Bar Council of Delhi in the same year. He practiced law extensively at both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
Recognized for his legal acumen, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in January 2003. His judicial career advanced further when he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, achieving permanent status on December 17, 2009.
Upon taking his oath, Justice Manmohan will join the Supreme Court, which will then operate with 33 judges, just one shy of its full sanctioned strength of 34.
