The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday submitted a sealed-cover report to the Calcutta High Court outlining its findings regarding an alleged conspiracy in the August 2024 rape and murder of an on-duty trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh received the document during an in-camera proceeding. The court scheduled the next hearing for arguments on November 20.
Court Directives and Timeline
Thursday’s submission complied with instructions issued by the division bench on August 28. In that order, the court asked the central investigating agency to present a detailed account tracing how its officers established the suspected involvement of specific individuals in the alleged criminal conspiracy at the north Kolkata facility.
Mandate of the Special Investigation Team
The current proceedings stem from earlier directions by the High Court, which on May 21 mandated the formation of a three-member CBI special investigation team led by the agency’s Joint Director (East).
The specialized unit was assigned to reconstruct the entire sequence of events surrounding the incident, beginning from the time the postgraduate trainee had dinner on the night of August 9, 2024, through to her subsequent cremation.
The victim’s parents approached the High Court with allegations that crucial evidence had been destroyed and that authorities made deliberate efforts to downplay the crime immediately after it occurred.
Public Outrage and Prior Conviction
The crime occurred inside the state-run hospital during the night shift of August 9, 2024, triggering widespread outrage. The incident prompted sustained demonstrations and night vigils across West Bengal while igniting protests nationwide.
In the principal criminal case, the Sealdah Sessions Court in Kolkata convicted Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, for the rape and murder of the doctor, sentencing him to imprisonment for the remainder of his life.
