Calcutta High Court Seeks State Report on 11 Criminal Cases Against Arrested TMC MLA Dilip Mondal

In a significant legal development, the Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the West Bengal government to submit a detailed status report on 11 criminal cases filed against arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Dilip Mondal.

The directive was issued by a vacation bench of Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) after Mondal approached the high court seeking to quash the multiple criminal cases registered against him. The state government has been asked to present the status report before a regular bench once the court resumes its sessions after the summer break.

Arrest and Legal Battle

Mondal, who represents the Bishnupur South constituency, was recently apprehended by police in Puri, Odisha, and subsequently brought back to West Bengal to face charges. During Friday’s hearing, the state’s counsel confirmed to the court that the MLA is currently in custody in connection with the 11 pending criminal cases.

Provocative Remarks and the Viral Video

The legal trouble for the TMC lawmaker intensified following a political controversy triggered by a viral video on social media. In the clip, Mondal was purportedly heard making provocative remarks and issuing direct threats to workers and supporters of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The remarks were allegedly made during a TMC victory rally on May 11. Following a formal complaint, the police initiated a search operation and registered a case against Mondal on charges related to provocation and intimidation of rival party workers.

Luxury Properties Spark Political Storm

As part of their ongoing investigation, police forces previously executed search warrants at two properties linked to Mondal in Pailan, located on the southern fringes of Kolkata.

These searches quickly escalated into a major political talking point when images of Mondal’s lavish residence surfaced online. The sprawling property—complete with landscaped gardens and a massive swimming pool—was widely compared to a luxury resort by social media users, drawing intense public scrutiny.
