Calcutta High Court Seeks Detailed Report from SSC on 1,806 Tainted School Job Appointees

The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) to file a fresh report disclosing comprehensive details of 1,806 tainted candidates whose appointments were invalidated by the Supreme Court last year.

Justice Amrita Sinha, while hearing the matter, observed that although the SSC has submitted a list containing the roll numbers, names, subjects, names of parents, and dates of birth of the candidates, it does not disclose the category in which they were found to be tainted. Crucially, the list also omits details regarding the school and district of their initial appointment under the first State Level Selection Test (SLST) held in 2016.

“The purpose of publication of the list of tainted candidates is for the purpose of identifying the candidates,” Justice Sinha underlined, recalling a previous direction passed by the court on November 19, 2025.

The court has now directed the SSC to publish a comprehensive list containing all relevant particulars to allow for proper identification of each candidate whose appointment was tainted.

The matter will be next heard on February 11.

During the hearing, the lawyer for the SSC informed the court that steps are being taken to publish a further list containing the required information.

The development comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s April 2025 verdict, which upheld the Calcutta High Court’s decision to invalidate the appointments of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff in government and government-aided schools across West Bengal. The appointments, made through the 2016 SLST, were found to have been vitiated by procedural irregularities.

Following the apex court’s order, the SSC has initiated a fresh recruitment process under the second SLST, 2025.

The current proceedings before Justice Sinha focus on ensuring transparency and accountability in identifying those whose appointments were declared invalid.
