Calcutta High Court Orders CBI to Report on Sandip Ghosh’s Plea to Liquidate Fixed Deposit

In a recent turn of events, the Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a detailed report concerning the plea of Sandip Ghosh, the embattled former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh, currently under arrest, has sought the court’s permission to liquidate his bank fixed deposit, citing the financial needs of his family.

Justice Subhendu Samanta issued the directive after Ghosh petitioned the court, requesting the State Bank of India to liquidate his fixed deposit. The plea comes in the backdrop of his arrest on September 2, related to allegations of financial irregularities at the state-run RG Kar Hospital. Further complicating matters, Ghosh faces charges of tampering with evidence in the case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor on duty.

During the hearing, Ghosh’s legal counsel argued that his client’s wife had approached the bank to liquidate the deposit, given the dire financial straits of the family. He further clarified that the original documents pertinent to the fixed deposit remain in Ghosh’s possession and are not part of the items seized by the CBI.

Opposing the plea, the bank’s lawyer maintained that given the ongoing CBI investigation into Ghosh’s activities, liquidating the fixed deposit at this juncture would be inappropriate.

Justice Samanta noted the absence of the CBI as a party in Ghosh’s petition. Consequently, he instructed Ghosh to include the central investigative agency as a respondent to the plea, underlining its crucial role given its ongoing investigation into the accusations leveled against Ghosh.
