Calcutta HC Orders Tight Security at Durgapur Medical College Where Gang Rape Survivor Is Undergoing Treatment

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the police to ensure that no unauthorised entry takes place inside the private medical college and hospital in Durgapur, where a gang rape survivor is currently receiving treatment.

A vacation bench of Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) passed the order while hearing a petition filed by an NGO. The plea sought directions to the West Bengal government to deploy adequate police personnel to secure the campus of the medical college in Paschim Bardhaman district.

The bench also ordered that adequate security measures be put in place to maintain peace and order in and around the institute. The directions come amid protests by opposition political parties outside the hospital following the incident.

The survivor, a student of the medical college, was allegedly gang-raped on the night of October 10 when she went out with a male friend for dinner. The assault reportedly took place outside the campus.
