Bombay High Court Quashes Order Canceling Arms License of Ex-IAS Officer’s Mother

The Bombay High Court has set aside a decision by the Pune Police Commissioner to cancel the arms license of Manorama Khedkar, the mother of ousted IAS officer Puja Khedkar. The court’s decision came after finding procedural errors in the notice served to Mrs. Khedkar, calling for the matter to be reevaluated.

On November 27, Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan ordered the Pune police to reconsider their decision, highlighting that Manorama Khedkar had not been duly served with the notice regarding the cancellation of her license. This oversight led to the High Court’s intervention, emphasizing the need for due process.

The controversy traces back to a land dispute in Dhadwali village, where a viral video captured Manorama Khedkar brandishing a gun. The video incited public outrage and her subsequent arrest on July 18 in Raigad under severe charges, including attempt to murder and rioting, along with violations under the Arms Act.

Five days after her arrest, on July 23, the Pune Police Commissioner sought to revoke her arms license, which was officially canceled on August 2. However, Manorama Khedkar contested this move in the High Court, arguing that she was not given a fair opportunity to present her side, as she was in custody and unable to attend the hearing scheduled on August 2. She was later released on bail.
