In a recent ruling, the Bombay High Court awarded permanent medical bail to Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, amidst his ongoing battle with cancer. Goyal, 75, has been facing charges in a significant money laundering case brought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Justice N J Jamadar, who had previously granted Goyal interim bail on medical grounds in May, solidified this decision on Monday. The move comes after detailed considerations of Goyal’s health conditions, which necessitate specific medical treatments unavailable in custody. Despite the ED’s suggestion that Goyal could receive adequate treatment while hospitalized in custody, the court favored the bail, allowing him more freedom to manage his health care.
Goyal’s legal troubles began in September 2023 when he was arrested under accusations of laundering money and misappropriating loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore from Canara Bank, intended for the now-defunct Jet Airways. His wife, Anita Goyal, also implicated in the case, was arrested in November 2023. She was granted bail by a special court on the grounds of her age and medical condition but unfortunately passed away on May 16 this year.
