In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the Bombay High Court has banned the use of single-use plastic bottles and bags within its premises. The Registrar General of the High Court issued a circular stating, “On directions of the Chief Justice (Justice DK Upadhyaya), the single-use plastic bottles and bags are banned in the High Court premises, with immediate effect.”
This decision aligns with Maharashtra’s broader efforts to combat plastic pollution. In March 2018, the state government imposed a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags and disposable plastic items. The High Court’s recent action reinforces its commitment to environmental protection and sets an example for other institutions to follow.
The ban on single-use plastics in the High Court premises is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste generation and promote more sustainable practices among court staff, lawyers, and visitors. This move comes as a welcome step in the ongoing battle against plastic pollution, which has been a growing concern in Maharashtra and across India.
