Bombay HC Judge Signs Living Will on Retirement Day

In a significant move on the day of his retirement, Justice Bharat Deshpande of the Bombay High Court at Goa signed a living will, setting a profound example of legal preparedness and personal dignity. A living will, legally known as an advanced medical care directive, outlines a person’s wishes for medical care if they become unable to communicate their decisions.

The event was confirmed by Dr. Sandesh Chodankar, chief of the Indian Medical Association’s Goa unit, who noted that Justice Deshpande executed the document to ensure dignity in the potential final moments of life. “Justice Deshpande signed the document on Friday, marking his last day in service as a judge. This act not only serves his personal ethics but also encourages others to consider such preparations,” stated Dr. Chodankar.

The decision to sign a living will on such a notable day highlights the importance of legal tools in safeguarding individual rights and preferences in medical scenarios. This gesture by Justice Deshpande could inspire further discussion and acceptance of living wills within the community.
