BCI Imposes Temporary Ban on Local Bar Association Elections in Uttar Pradesh

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh to halt all elections of district and local bar associations in the state between November 15, 2025, and February 15, 2026. The decision aims to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council elections scheduled during that period.

In an official communication dated October 25, 2025, issued under the signature of Srimanto Sen, Principal Secretary, Bar Council of India, the BCI instructed the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council to inform all Bar Associations across the state not to hold or notify any elections during the specified three-month window.

The letter, sent as per the directions of the Hon’ble Chairman of the Bar Council of India, noted that the temporary embargo was essential to prevent overlapping electoral activities that could cause “distraction or conflicting schedules” during the main Bar Council election process.
