In a significant push towards judicial efficiency, the Allahabad High Court has issued orders to expedite the trial of cases against former and current lawmakers that have been pending for over 20 years. The directive aims to address delays in the legal processes involving members of Parliament (MPs) and the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
During a public interest litigation (PIL) hearing on Thursday, Justices M K Gupta and Samit Gopal presided over the matter, expressing the need for swift legal proceedings. The court emphasized the importance of resolving these long-standing cases to uphold the integrity of the judicial system and public trust in elected officials.
The bench has instructed the relevant MP-MLA courts across the districts to compile and submit a status report by December 10, detailing the progress made in these cases. The high court’s registry has also been directed to organize the data from various courts into a tabular chart, which will be reviewed in subsequent hearings.
Further revelations during the hearing highlighted the severity of the issue, with reports indicating that nine cases involving MPs and MLAs have been pending for more than 30 years. This startling fact underscores the chronic backlog and the urgent need for judicial intervention to ensure timely justice.
