In a significant relief to Bhim Army chief and Lok Sabha MP from Nagina, Chandrashekhar Azad, the Allahabad High Court has directed the Saharanpur trial court to reconsider his discharge application in connection with the 2017 Saharanpur violence case.
Justice Sameer Jain issued the order on Friday while disposing of Chandrashekhar’s petition challenging a March 10, 2025, ruling of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court in Saharanpur, which had rejected his discharge plea.
The case pertains to an FIR registered on May 9, 2017, alleging that Chandrashekhar had held a public meeting without official permission and incited violence and arson during the unrest in Saharanpur that year. Following an investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against him, and the trial court subsequently took cognisance and commenced proceedings.

After hearing arguments from both parties, the high court observed that the trial court should reconsider the matter and decide afresh on the discharge application filed by the Dalit leader and first-time MP.
