Allahabad HC Remarks ‘It Seems Kalyug Has Arrived’ Amid Ongoing Legal Dispute Over Elderly Couple’s Property

In a hearing that underscored the emotional and societal costs of legal battles involving family members, the Allahabad High Court recently made headlines with its observations on a protracted property dispute between an elderly couple from Aligarh. The case, which involves 80-year-old Munesh Kumar Gupta and his 76-year-old wife Gayatri Devi, has not only separated the couple but also brought to the fore the complexities of legal battles over property and maintenance among aging partners.

The dispute began when Gayatri Devi sought financial support from her husband in Family Court. Despite her husband’s ₹35,000 pension, the court awarded her a monthly alimony of ₹5,000—a decision that Munesh Gupta challenged, refusing to comply with the Family Court’s ruling. As the dispute escalated, the matter was taken to the Allahabad High Court in hopes of reaching a resolution that could satisfy both parties.

During the proceedings, the emotional toll of the case was palpable. Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamsheri, presiding over the hearing, lamented the state of affairs, suggesting that such disputes are reflective of broader societal issues. His remark, “It seems Kalyug has arrived,” highlighted his concern about the era of strife and complexity in familial relationships, signaling a deep-seated worry about the implications of ongoing legal fights among close relatives.

The court has made concerted efforts to mediate between Munesh and Gayatri Devi, aiming to steer the couple towards an amicable settlement. The hope is that by the next hearing, a compromise might be reached, bringing an end to the years of litigation that have not only drained the couple’s resources but also strained their emotional well-being.
