Allahabad HC Initiates Criminal Contempt Case Against Senior Lawyer for Allegedly Shouting at Court

Lucknow, September 27, 2024: In a significant move, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has initiated criminal contempt proceedings against senior advocate Satish Chandra Mishra for allegedly shouting and making disrespectful remarks during court proceedings. The order was passed by a division bench consisting of Justice Sangeeta Chandra and Justice Brij Raj Singh.

The incident occurred during the hearing of Laxmi Security Guard Services and Another vs. State of U.P. and 8 Others, where Mishra, representing the petitioners, reportedly demanded an immediate interim order, despite the court’s decision to defer the matter for a later date.

According to the court order, Mishra became visibly agitated when the court declined to grant an interim order without reviewing the records of the Nagar Nigam, Lucknow. He allegedly shouted at the judges and insisted that the matter be decided on the spot. When asked to present his arguments on merit, Mishra allegedly refused and expressed displeasure, accusing the court of being biased toward the respondents.

The court, in its order, highlighted Mishra’s behavior, noting that his conduct was unbecoming of a senior advocate and had the potential to “scandalize and lower the dignity of the court.” Despite being requested to maintain decorum, Mishra allegedly continued making personal imputations against the court and its proceedings.

In light of these events, the bench referred the matter to the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court for the initiation of criminal contempt proceedings against the senior lawyer.
