The Supreme Court on Monday, September 7, rejected an application seeking a six-month extension for the High-Powered Committee examining the definition and protection of the Aravalli Hills, instructing the panel to submit its final report by November 30.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana cautioned that failure to adhere to the revised timeline would result in the reconstitution of the entire panel. Chief Justice Kant observed that the committee should work day and night to conclude its findings within the two-month window rather than seek further postponements.
The court-appointed body had requested the additional six months on the grounds that more time was required to formulate a comprehensive and defensible evaluation across the Aravalli range.
The proceedings stem from December last year, when the top court initiated suo motu action following controversy surrounding an approved definition of the Aravalli Hills.
