The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Central Government regarding a petition demanding the repatriation of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s remains from Japan.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V Mohana issued notice to the Union government on the petition filed by Bose’s daughter, Anita B Pfaff. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi represented the petitioner during the hearing, which seeks official directions to facilitate the return of the nationalist leader’s remains currently housed at the Renkoji temple in Tokyo.
Historical Context and Disappearance
The judicial move touches on a long-standing issue following Netaji’s disappearance in August 1945, an event that led to multiple theories surrounding his fate. Several reports indicate that his remains have been preserved at the Tokyo temple, forming the basis for the plea to bring them back to India.
