The Meghalaya government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in the state in 2025.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu agreed on Thursday to hear the state’s plea on Friday after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought an urgent listing of the matter.
State Challenges High Court’s Bail Order
Appearing for the Meghalaya government, Mehta argued that the Meghalaya High Court had erred in upholding the grant of bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi. He submitted that the High Court’s decision was based on the finding that the grounds of arrest had not been fully supplied to the accused at the time of her arrest.
According to Mehta, the alleged deficiency stemmed from a typographical error that resulted in an incorrect statutory provision being cited in the arrest-related documents. He contended that this mistake should not have formed the basis for granting bail.
The Solicitor General also informed the Supreme Court that there was a possibility of the accused absconding if the bail order remained in force.
High Court Had Upheld Bail
On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court’s order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi.
Background Of The Case
Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi had travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon and were reported missing while visiting the Sohra area on May 23, 2025. Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was later recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, 2025.
According to the police, Sonam Raghuvanshi conspired with hired assailants to murder her husband for financial gain. The allegations form the basis of the prosecution’s case against her.
