The Delhi High Court has granted interim relief to actor Rajpal Yadav by suspending his sentence in multiple cheque bounce cases and directing his release from jail till March 18.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order after noting that Yadav had deposited ₹1.5 crore in the bank account of the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.
“We are granting you an interim suspension of sentence… It is till the next date of hearing,” the Court said.
The Court directed Yadav to surrender his passport and restrained him from leaving the country without prior permission. He has also been directed to remain present, either physically or virtually, on the next date of hearing.
Yadav had sought suspension of his sentence citing a marriage in his family scheduled for February 19.
The proceedings arise from revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court judgment, which had upheld their conviction by a magisterial court in April 2018 in cheque dishonour cases. The trial court had sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment.
Earlier, in June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended his conviction subject to his taking “sincere and genuine measures” to explore an amicable settlement with the complainant.
In its February 2 order directing Yadav to surrender by February 4, the High Court had deprecated his conduct, observing that he had repeatedly breached undertakings to repay the complainant.
The Court noted that he was required to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases and directed that the amount deposited with the Registrar General be released to the complainant.
It also recorded that two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh each were deposited in October 2025, while approximately ₹9 crore remained unpaid. The Court had then refused to extend the time granted for his surrender.
Yadav’s counsel had earlier submitted that the cheques were issued in connection with financing a film project that later failed at the box office, resulting in significant financial losses.
The matter will now be taken up on March 18.
