The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take remedial steps within two months to address the mismanagement of a ‘dhalao’ (waste collection point) in Sukhdev Vihar, warning that failure to do so would invite punitive consequences.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel passed the order on February 9 while hearing a plea that highlighted the deteriorating condition of the waste site. The petition alleged that the dhalao was emitting a foul smell and posing health hazards to residents due to improper upkeep.
Observing that the situation called for immediate intervention, the tribunal said, “We dispose of the original application directing the MCD commissioner to take appropriate remedial action within two months.”
The bench further directed that after the expiry of the two-month period, the Member Secretary of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) shall carry out an inspection of the site to verify compliance.
“If it is found that the needful has not been done, the member secretary will take appropriate punitive action against the MCD within two months thereafter,” the order stated.
