In a significant move toward digital modernization, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday unveiled a comprehensive suite of administrative reforms centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Chief Justice of India Surya Kant announced the initiatives, describing them as a critical milestone in enhancing operational efficiency and addressing the chronic issue of case pendency across the Indian judiciary.
The reforms include the launch of a unified digital platform connecting the Supreme Court with various High Courts, an integrated electronic payment system, and automated infrastructure management tools. These developments mark a structured push by the apex court to integrate emerging technologies into the daily functions of the registry and the broader legal ecosystem.
A Unified Platform for Real-Time Case Tracking
A cornerstone of the new reforms is a digital partnership between the Supreme Court and High Courts. This initiative establishes a unified platform designed to act as a live repository of case data.
Chief Justice Surya Kant stated during court proceedings that the judiciary has launched a digital partnership with various High Courts which will have a platform that alters the status of cases according to orders from different courts.
The system will automatically sync and update the status of cases based on orders passed by Trial Courts, High Courts, and the Supreme Court. By providing a transparent and real-time reflection of case pendency, the judiciary aims to ensure faster implementation of judicial orders and better management of the national caseload.
Financial and Infrastructure Modernization
Beyond case management, the Court is streamlining its internal financial and security processes:
- Integrated Payment System: A new digital gateway has been introduced to simplify payments for administrative services. This includes fees for the Advocates-on-Record (AoR) examination and charges for the court’s crèche facilities. The Chief Justice noted that this move is intended to usher in transparency for members of the Bar.
- Automated Security: The Court has automated its vehicle permit system and launched a park authorization record-keeping system. These steps are part of a broader effort to modernize the physical infrastructure and security of the Supreme Court complex.
The Chief Justice remarked that this is an administrative milestone and expressed hope that litigants and members of the Bar will benefit while also helping the registry in operational efficiency.
The Strategic Roadmap for AI
These announcements follow the December 2025 reconstitution of the Supreme Court’s Artificial Intelligence Committee. Chaired by Justice PS Narasimha, the committee is tasked with providing a roadmap for the ethical and effective adoption of AI tools.
The committee’s mandate focuses on high-impact areas including:
- Streamlining case scheduling and documentation.
- Optimizing case management workflows.
- Improving accessibility and transparency for the general public and litigants.
The Chief Justice emphasized that the judiciary is turning to technology to harness AI for increasing operational efficiency, signaling a shift toward a more data-driven and technologically resilient legal system in India.
