SC Raps Lawyer for Seeking Own Appointment as High Court Judge; Dismisses Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday sternly refused to entertain a petition seeking the petitionerโ€™s own appointment as a High Court judge, calling it a โ€œmockery of the system.โ€

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran took up the matter for the first time and expressed disbelief over the nature of the plea.

โ€œDo you want us to call the first three judges of this court here and hold a collegium meeting now? You are making a mockery of the system!โ€ CJI Gavai told the petitioner.

The Bench also observed that such a petition had no precedent. โ€œWhen have we heard petitions regarding the appointment of a High Court judge? How much cost should we impose?โ€ the CJI asked pointedly.

Facing the courtโ€™s reprimand, the petitionerโ€™s counsel sought permission to withdraw the plea. The court allowed the withdrawal but not before cautioning the lawyer about the seriousness of such filings.

โ€œSanad (license to practice law) should be withdrawn for filing such pleas,โ€ the CJI remarked, indicating that misuse of judicial process would not be tolerated.

With these observations, the petition was dismissed as withdrawn.
