Gauhati High Court Orders Contractor to File Progress Report on Repair of Mizoram’s Lifeline Highway

The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court has directed the contractor undertaking repairs of the severely damaged Sairang–Kawnpui stretch of National Highway 306 (NH-306/06) to submit a detailed progress report and completion schedule by October 31.

A division bench, while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Mizoram Truck Driver Association, issued the direction to MSJ Infratech, which is executing the repair work. The PIL highlights the persistent dilapidated state of the highway, describing it as a major obstacle to transportation and public safety in the region.

The court warned that if the contractor fails to file the affidavit within the stipulated time, officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will have to appear in person before the court on November 6, the next date of hearing.

Filed in July, the PIL underscores the worsening condition of the Sairang–Kawnpui stretch, especially during the monsoon, when landslides and poor road surfaces make travel dangerous. The petitioners argued that the government’s inaction has left truck drivers, transporters, and residents struggling on what is considered the “lifeline of Mizoram.”

The NH-306, portions of which are also designated as NH-06, is the principal route through which essential supplies and goods are transported to Mizoram from other northeastern states.

By seeking accountability from both the contractor and the NHIDCL, the Gauhati High Court has effectively placed the focus back on the urgent need to restore safe and reliable connectivity on one of Mizoram’s most crucial highways.
