Delhi Police Agrees to Lawyers’ Demand for Physical Appearance in Criminal Trials; Strike Decision Pending

The Delhi Police Commissioner’s office has accepted a key demand of striking lawyers that all police personnel must physically appear in courts to present evidence in criminal trials.

Tarun Rana, Additional Secretary General of the Coordination Committee of all District Bar Associations in the national capital, said the Commissioner’s office issued a fresh circular on Monday amending its earlier September 4 directive. The circular states:

“In partial modification of the earlier letter dated September 4, it is hereby directed that in all criminal trials, all police officers/personnel shall physically appear before the courts for the purpose of deposition/evidence.”

The bar associations had been protesting against the earlier directive, which allowed police officials to appear virtually in certain cases. The committee’s decision on whether to call off the ongoing strike is still awaited.
