Delhi HC to Hear Women Journalists’ Fresh Defamation Plea Against Abhijit Iyer Mitra on September 10

The Delhi High Court on Thursday fixed September 10 for hearing a fresh plea filed by a group of women journalists against commentator Abhijit Iyer Mitra, alleging that he published defamatory content against them on social media.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, who had earlier directed Mitra to remove certain offensive posts against nine women journalists associated with the media platform Newslaundry, observed that such language was “not permissible in a civilised society.”

The latest application before the High Court accuses Mitra of continuing to post defamatory remarks on X (formerly Twitter), despite earlier judicial directions. The petitioners have sought urgent directions for the removal of these posts and a restraint order preventing him from making further derogatory statements.

During Thursday’s hearing, the court noted that Mitra has already filed a reply to the interim application. The complainants’ counsel informed the bench that they received Mitra’s response on August 27 and sought time to file a rejoinder. Allowing the request, Justice Kaurav directed that the rejoinder be filed before the next date of hearing.
