Sambhal Temple-Mosque Dispute: Chandausi Court Fixes September 25 for Hearing

A civil court in Chandausi on Thursday fixed September 25 as the next date of hearing in the ongoing dispute over the Shahi Jama Masjid and Harihar temple in Sambhal district.

The matter came up before Civil Judge (Senior Division) Aditya Singh. Advocate Shakeel Ahmed Warsi, appearing for the Shahi Jama Masjid, told reporters that the hearing, originally listed for the day, was deferred owing to an interim stay granted by the Supreme Court. Hindu side counsel Shri Shri Gopal Sharma also confirmed the development.

The Muslim side has challenged the maintainability of the case in the Allahabad High Court. However, on May 19, the High Court upheld the trial court’s order permitting a court-monitored survey of the disputed premises and directed continuation of the proceedings.

The case dates back to November 19, 2023, when Hindu petitioners, including advocates Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain, filed a suit in the Sambhal district court claiming that the Shahi Jama Masjid was constructed over a pre-existing Harihar temple.

On the very day the suit was filed, a court-directed survey was carried out at the site, followed by another on November 24. The second survey triggered large-scale unrest in Sambhal, leaving four persons dead and 29 police personnel injured.

In connection with the violence, police booked Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and mosque committee head Zafar Ali, apart from registering an FIR against 2,750 unidentified persons.

With the Supreme Court’s stay in force, the Chandausi court has adjourned proceedings until September 25. The case remains one of the most sensitive temple-mosque disputes in Uttar Pradesh, drawing close legal and public attention.
