The family of a 29-year-old man who allegedly died in police custody in Sivaganga district has approached the Madras High Court, seeking a direction to register a murder case against those responsible.
A writ petition filed by the family of Ajithkumar, a resident of Tiruppuvanam, came up for hearing before a bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday. The petitioners urged the court to issue a writ of mandamus or other suitable orders to the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP), directing them to act on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother.
Ajithkumar was reportedly picked up by local police in connection with a theft case. His subsequent death in custody triggered widespread public outrage, with several political parties condemning the incident and calling for accountability.

The petitioner’s counsel told reporters that a video allegedly showing plainclothes policemen assaulting Ajithkumar has been submitted to the court as evidence.
