In a significant development for the Indian judiciary, Justices N.V. Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S. Chandurkar were sworn in today as Judges of the Supreme Court of India, restoring the apex court to its sanctioned full strength of 34 judges.
The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai at the Supreme Court premises. Notably, Justice Vijay Bishnoi took his oath in Hindi, marking a gesture of linguistic inclusion during the ceremony.
These appointments were officially approved by the President of India on May 29, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium dated May 26. The Central Government issued the formal notification on the same day, elevating the three senior High Court judges to the nation’s highest court.
Profiles of the Newly Appointed Judges:
- Justice N.V. Anjaria: Formerly the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, his parent High Court is Gujarat. He is set to serve on the Supreme Court bench until March 23, 2030.
- Justice Vijay Bishnoi: Previously the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, with his parent High Court being Rajasthan. His term in the Supreme Court will continue until March 25, 2029.
- Justice Atul S. Chandurkar: He served as a judge of the Bombay High Court prior to his elevation. His tenure on the Supreme Court bench will run until April 7, 2030.
These appointments come at a critical juncture when the Supreme Court had a few vacancies, and with Justice Bela M. Trivedi scheduled to retire on June 9, the bench will soon see another vacancy.
