The President of India has appointed Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The appointment will come into effect from May 14, 2025.
The official notification was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), dated May 9, 2025, by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice. The appointment has been made under clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
The notification stated:
“In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with effect from 14.05.2025.”
Justice Surya Kant succeeds the previous officeholder and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening access to justice and legal aid services across the country through NALSA’s institutional framework.
