Mumbai Police Link Knife Fragments in Saif Ali Khan Attack to Accused, Oppose Bail

In a critical development in the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan, Mumbai Police presented evidence in court linking the knife used in the assault to the accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam. The incident, which occurred on January 16 at Khan’s residence in Bandra, Mumbai, left the actor severely injured and led to emergency surgery.

During the court session on Friday, police opposed Islam’s bail plea, citing forensic analysis that matched three knife fragments: one lodged near Khan’s spine, another found at the crime scene, and a third with the accused. These fragments were confirmed to be from the same weapon used in the attack, according to a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested two days after the incident. The police’s submission emphasized the severity of the crime and the strong evidence linking Islam to the attack. They highlighted the risks of releasing him on bail, including potential absconding due to his illegal residency status and the possibility of influencing or threatening the complainant and witnesses.

Furthermore, police raised concerns about the risk of Islam committing similar offenses if released. They argued that detaining him further was necessary, despite the defense’s claims of cooperation with the investigation and assertions that the FIR was falsely registered.
