In a compelling address during the International Women’s Day event hosted by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya emphasized the importance of respecting women over worshipping them.
Speaking on the celebrated day, Justice Upadhyaya invoked a Sanskrit verse to underline his message: “Where women are respected, gods make their home. In my understanding, it is more crucial that women are respected rather than worshipped,” he explained. His statement aimed to inspire a shift from symbolic reverence to practical, everyday respect for women’s rights and dignity.
Chief Justice Upadhyaya candidly addressed the historical context that shapes contemporary gender dynamics, admitting to carrying “the baggage of 2000 plus 59 years,” alluding to ingrained societal biases that persist through the ages. He urged the audience to shed these antiquated notions to pave the way for genuine gender equality.
Adding to the discourse, Supreme Court Justice KV Viswanathan discussed the disparities in legal services accessible to women, particularly in rural areas. He highlighted several barriers such as regional disparities, lack of awareness, cultural norms, and bureaucratic challenges that collectively hinder women’s access to justice.
Justice Viswanathan also touched on the enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, sharing concerns about the inadequate implementation of laws intended to prevent gender-biased sex selection. “The Chief Justice stressed the need for more robust enforcement of this act, as prosecutions are rare, which undermines the law’s effectiveness,” he explained.
The event not only commemorated International Women’s Day but also served as a platform for judicial leaders to advocate for practical steps toward achieving gender justice, moving beyond mere celebrations to enact real change.
