The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Telangana government and other relevant parties concerning allegations of undue delay by the assembly speaker in deciding the disqualification petitions of several MLAs from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) who have since joined the Congress party.
A bench headed by Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih has scheduled the next hearing for March 25, during which it expects responses from the state government, the Speaker’s office, the Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretary, the Election Commission of India, and the legislators involved in the defection.
The apex court’s notice stems from two separate pleas. The first plea challenges a November 2024 order from the Telangana High Court that dealt with the disqualification of three BRS MLAs who have since aligned themselves with the ruling Congress. The second plea concerns the remaining seven BRS legislators who also defected to the Congress party.
