Two New Judges Join Delhi High Court, Total Strength Now 41

The Delhi High Court welcomed two new judges on Friday, increasing its total number of judges to 41. The newly appointed Justices Renu Bhatnagar and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta, both of whom previously served as judicial officers in the district judiciary, were sworn in by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya in a ceremony at the high court premises.

Chief Justice Upadhyaya congratulated the new justices, marking their transition with a warm welcome to the high court. “Congratulations. Welcome to our high court,” he stated, following the official oath-taking ceremony.

These appointments were officially confirmed on February 19 by the Central government, following recommendations earlier in the month by the Supreme Court collegium. The additions come at a time when the Delhi High Court is operating below its sanctioned capacity; the court is authorized a maximum of 60 judges, highlighting the significant increase in judicial capacity with the latest appointments.

The enhancement of the bench with Justices Bhatnagar and Gupta is expected to aid in addressing the backlog of cases and streamlining the process of justice delivery in the capital’s high court.
