Delhi High Court Advocates Compassionate Approach Towards Adolescent Love

The Delhi High Court has called for a progressive shift in how the law treats adolescent love, advocating for understanding and respect over punitive measures. In a landmark ruling, Justice Jasmeet Singh emphasized the importance of evolving legal perspectives to better respect and protect the natural developments of adolescent relationships that are consensual and devoid of coercion.

Delivered on January 30 and published on Valentine’s Day, the court’s decision underscores the recognition of love as a fundamental human experience, one that should not be marred by the fear of criminal consequences for young individuals. “Love is a fundamental human experience, and adolescents have the right to form emotional connections,” Justice Singh stated in his ruling.

The court stressed that while safeguarding minors remains crucial, the primary objective of the law should be to prevent exploitation and abuse without unnecessarily penalizing consensual relationships among teenagers. “The focus of the law should be on preventing exploitation and abuse rather than punishing love,” the court advised.
